The Stratos was an enormously successful rally car for Lancia, winning the World Championship for Manufacturers in 1974, 1975 and 1976. By 1977 it was becoming long in the tooth for a competition car, but kept on winning. Italian rally ace and reigning world champion Sandro Munari used this one to win the '77 Monte Carlo rally.
Like the roadgoing versions, the rally Stratos shared it's 2.4 litre V6 and gearbox with the Ferrari Dino 246GT. The whole package was mounted transversely in a mid engined, rear wheel drive layout, allowing the overall length of the car to be kept short. This also allowed a short wheelbase that meant the Stratos had a reputation for nervous, twitchy handling. Not ideal for an inexperienced driver then, but ideal for a rally car as it allowed for rapid changes of direction in the hands of enormously skilled rally drivers.
Kyosho make this model of the Stratos and it is a great 1:18th. It has nice engine detail and a realistic competition interior. Other nice features include pop up headlights (one of which wont stay "popped up" on this model annoyingly!), large rear mudguards supported by chains and a set of extra night driving lights on the bonnet complete with a removable cover. The rear hatch fits better on this model than it does on my street version of the Stratos (also by Kyosho), and overall I prefer it slightly to the roadgoing version. It gets a solid 8/10 marks.
I saw the real car in action at the 2001 Goodwood Festival of Speed, and it looked and sounded fantastic as it blasted up the short hillclimb course laid out in the grounds of Goodwood House. And better still it was driven by Sandro Munari himself! I've added a picture of the real car below the pictures of the model.Lancia delta
